I think it's important, especially for the storytelling part of it, to start thinking about the bathroom and what she would have in it. I think in terms of timeline we can be a little less clear (40s-50s) since I don't think bathrooms change very much within a decade. Do you agree?
1950s:
Check out the wall scroll.
1940s:
Interesting use of accent trim.
Firstly, amazing post! Great reference - full of answers to the questions we've been asking.
ReplyDeleteI guess they DID use bathroom rugs! Shaggy ones, too. I think that if we do use a rug, we shy away from something that looks soft/plush.
I love all the seating areas. I think we should definitely incorporate some kind of small stool - especially if it's this style: http://bit.ly/kt6jbp
Stylistically, I'm mostly drawn to the "First Aid to Beauty" illustration. The robe, the white walls, white floor, dainty little sink, vertical mirror. All of it. I think the bottles lining up on the sink could be a great way to inject a bit of her personality (as we discussed) into this space.
I think whatever we decide the rug to be should reflect something of the "other" world (can we come up with a name for it-- even if temporary? so we can stop saying "up there" and "down there" haha).
ReplyDeleteWhile I was washing my face this morning I thought about how she would do it and how we talked about the Mulan sweep. I think it would be cool- even if it were too subtle to notice- to have her movements be dance-esque or echo some quality of the choreography.. maybe gradually more pronounced as she removes the accessories and the most pronounced when she turns into the the tub. So the same items that hinder her dance and happiness are the same ones that introduce her dance when removed.
Oh but yes, I love that stool! and now I want one for myself. I was also drawn to the same illustration, and even her towel (or.. what is that?) is kind of cute.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me where you sourced the image 40s+women.jpg as I would like to use it for some printed leaflets?
Hi! I'm not sure which image you're referring to, as I didn't spot that filename anywhere.. but each image is still linked to its original site. You can find the site by deleting the extraneous parts of the url and just heading to www.[whichever it is].com . Be advised that I am unsure of what the rights are for reusing the images in printed material. Good luck!
